  First week

This is it pancit!

This week was a long and fun week! The travel going to Indonesia, Samarinda Balikpapan was really tiring. We had to travel through plane from our city going to manila, Manila to Jakarta. We waited 3 hours for our flight to Jakarta, Jakarta to Balikpapan and another 3 hours land trip going to Samarinda. It was really tiring yet it was memorable. When we arrived at the Balikpapan Airport, 2 of the faculty from Mulawarman Univeristy (recieving school), fetch us there. They were really kind and accommodating. They treated us in a restaurant and brought us to a convenient store to buy snacks. When we arrived at Samarinda, we saw a huge tarpaulin with our faces on it. I felt so welcomed. The same day we went to a hotel where our coordinators were staying. They allowed us to sleep with them before they go back to the Philippines. The next day, we went to Mulawarman University for the welcome ceremony. They actually really organized a welcome ceremony for us. In the ceremony, we met our mentor and cooperating teacher. When I talked to them, I realized that both of them doesn't know how to speak English. But I was relieved because they had a companion who became my friend who knows how to speak English. The next day, my mentor brought me to the school where I was assigned. When I got inside, all of them were smiling and were very happy. The kids presented a dance number for my me and my mentor. They were so Lucuh (cute). My school is actually a muslim school. So their uniform covered their whole body. I was told by my cooperating teacher to wear long sleeves every time I get inside the school. Tiwi, the companion of my cooperating teacher was also with me. She helped my translate English to Indonesian. So I was toured inside the school and I have learned that their educational set up and system is very different from the set up in the Philippines. I observed every classroom. All of the teachers in the school despite the language barrier were all so kind. They treat me as if I was like a guest and a star. The children were also very respectable and kind. They all lined up and kissed my hands one by one. During the first day of observation, i still had a lot of questions in my mind because I was worried that I might not accomplish my 20 teaching hours. The next day, Tiwi went with me again, for the second observation I already knew what class will I observe. I chose to observe Sentra balok A1. I observed the class and how the moving happens. At the end of the class. Ibu Hanifah invited us for the farewell party of the pre-service teachers there. We ate and had selfies with the teacher and the pre-service teachers. When I went back to the dorm, I met a teacher in the faculty Ibu Farny. She speaks quite well in English and so I talked with her and raised up my concerns to her. My concern is the language barrier and the temporary assignment of tiwi as my translator. The next day, I observed again, I learned there is really a big difference between the discipline classroom management of indonesian schools and the schools in the Philippine. The teachers's way of managing their class is through songs. They get student's attention through songs. Friday, Ibu Farny brought me to different places in Samarinda and tenggarong. She toured me around. She was very kind to me. She even paid for everything. Saturday, we had a meeting with pak sunardi. He asked each of us how we are doing in our assigned schools. He also clarified a lot of information. Sunday, Pak Bibit brought us to the places where ibu farny brought me except the museum of Mulawarman university and Masjid islamic center. So far my first week was a blast!

strainer and then place the powder inside the bottle. Many also went outside and did the 6th and the 7th activity in which they need to pour the water slowly inside the bottle until its full.

So far all of the children were able to go through all the activities. They really had fun and l

Sentra Alam or nature. In this area, the children are doing activities that are related to the nature. The materials that the teachers use are sands, water, paper, etc. all from the nature. As I have observed their fine motor skills are really developed in this area. Children manipulate different things that are found in the environment like seeds, leaves, sands and more. During my teaching demo, the children were very active and were not listening to me.

I had to repeat the rules many times. Before I allowed them to do the activities, I demonstrated the instructions first so that they would know how to go about with the activity. After the demonstration, I gave them the signal to choose any activity. Out of all the activities, the 3rd activity really caught their attention. The activity was they need to make an obat (medicine) using a mortar and pestle. They have to crush the monggo seed pour it in the

in the child's development.

Dramatic play area cannot only develop the child's imagination but also their socio-emotional development and character as well. While I was observing them, there were times when their patience are tested. There was a child who was task to pretend to be the costumer in a restaurant. The child waited for her order. The child became very impatient and started asking the waiter about her order. In this kind of scenario, the child learned the value of waiting. I have learned so much from my experience and observation in this area.

At Sentra Peran or Drama, I really made sure that they children will be able to play different roles like pretend as a doctor, a nurse, a cashier, pharmacist, patient, waiter, and an administrator in a hospital. I interacted with them I pretended to be a patient, a costumer and a consumer. I saw that the children were serious with their roles. Each of them played a  role in the activity. As what I have observed the children were all so engaged in the activity. All of them had the chance to portray different roles.

As the costumer, I tried to order food and brought some food from the grocery. I also handed them play money that looked like real money. They received it and gave me the goodies. I also showed them a video clip of Marsha and the bear, where in the bear pretended that he was sick and Marsha also pretended to be the doctor. The 2 characters showed the kids a picture of what happens when someone is sick and the importance of the role of the doctor. During the experience, I also realized how importance it is to develop this area

But one thing really made me sad during that time was my inability to respond to my pupils because I cannot understand them. They keep on talking to me and sharing a lot of things to me but I cannot understand anything that they have said. I wish I could understand them.

My activity for today is building a hospital, pharmacy and ambulance since my topic is all about the community worker: doctor.

the children. I also prepared my lesson plan and script. I thought about making a script with the translated words so that the children can somehow understand me. When I started teaching, I felt very confident despite the difficulties that I have experience while teaching. I still did my best. The result was impressive the children still learned something because they were able to answer my questions.

My first day of teaching demonstration was full of tension and excitement. I really prepared for it since it will be my first time to teach in a class where non of my students know how to speak english. I prepared  my instructional materials and made sure that it is visible for all

Monday

Tuesday

I taught at sentra balok again but with a different topic. Our topic was about the community worker "nelayan" or fishermen. I gave an exciting activity for the pupils! I made fishes with the letters f-i-s-h-e-r-m-e-n. Then I made a fishing rod made of wood then each of them were asked to fish the letters and put them in the correct order "fishermen".  after the fishing activity, I gave them another activity and this is for the application part. I grouped them into three.

The first group will create a fish market, the second group will make an aquarium and the third one will make a boat. The kids were very creative and imagination during the activity. Many of them made use of all the blocks and formed into a boat, aquarium or fish market. The most significant experience I had during my demo was when I facilitated the first activity: Fishing game. I saw how important it is to give children fun and engaging activities so

so they would easily remember and grasp the concept.  The educational insight that I have learned from the experience is the significance of knowing the children interest and integrating it in your teaching.

Teaching at Sentra Persiappan was fun and interesting. I learned that my pupils have different ways of learning. Some learn best when they are singing, some learn best when they are moving and most of them learn best when they are seeing. So, I tried my best to incorporate songs, more activities and videos so that all of my pupils will learn effectively. I was also amazed with the materials they have. Most of their materials are DIY materials

or Do It Yourself materials. They were made from recyclable materials and materials that can be found at home. Before I let do the activity, I gave them the instructions first through a demonstration. At first, they were all not paying attention to me and then I began to sing a song (Look at me, Im a

butterfly). Then all eyes were on me. I demonstrated each activity. There were six activities. After the demonstration, the children are given the opportunity to choose their own activity. The head teacher and I will just observe and guide the children as they do their activity. I was observing the children, I noticed that most of the children are really having fun. The materials that were provided for the activities were all so friendly and didactic. I asked Ibu haniffah where they bought the materials and then I found out that the materials are very expensive.

I asked ibu Hannifah because God willing I will make a school someday. My mother and I are looking for durable, good yet affordable materials. The materials that I have seen in this school really gave me an idea on what to buy and how to make IM's that are made of recyclable things.

Monday

Last Friday, I was invited by my cooperating teacher to visit the school where his son is teaching: Muhammadiyah School and another Kindergarten school: TK ABA 7. When I arrived at Muhammadiyah, I was very overwhelmed by their warm welcome. I did not expect that the my coming with be such a big deal. All the high school students gathered together at their covered court and waited for me to come. I was really very surprised. I was more surprised when my name was called, and they asked me to give a message to the students. Well, because I was not prepared, I just shared my experiences here in Samarinda, the difference of the educational system in the Philippines and in Samarinda, the beautiful place in the Philippines and a motivational message to the high school students. I cannot believe what I was seeing. After the message, we had a group photo. The first batch of students were all boys. All of the boys lined up themselves by height and I was at the center of all the boys. I felt like a putra or a princess. Then after the boys, the girls lined up themselves and I joined them. The experience was very overwhelming. I met some young men and women who are very kind and respectable. The next stop was at TK’ AB 7. When I arrived there, the kids were also ready and prepared to meet me. They were sitting at the place where they usually hold their flag ceremony. Then, I introduced myself to all of the students and the teachers. I even sang a song for all the children. They were all so joyful and happy singing. Then, we had our picture taken with the teachers and the students. My experience was amazing. Thank God for that blessing!

For this week except for Monday (I had my last teaching demonstration), I assisted the teachers in every sentra. The most significant experience I had this Tuesday was when my students talked to me even if they knew that I couldn’t understand them. I was very touched because even though I was a guest teacher, they treat me as their teacher in the classroom. Communication is essential in the classroom. Without communication, there would be no direct connection between the teachers and the students. The educational insight that I have learned from the experience was, the problem of language barrier. Language barrier has been my problem since the first day I stepped into my assigned school. I was very anxious about how I could connect and communicate with my students when we don’t speak the same language. My teachers also don’t know how to speak English and my mentor as well. It would be much easier if the teachers know how to speak English, so they could help me translate whenever I teach. What breaks my heart is when every time my student will looks at me in the eye and talks to me, I could not answer them correctly. It hurts me seeing them disappointed because they could not converse with me. For this Wednesday, the most significant experience I had was when I observed one of my students coloring. She was imitating the sample I made. The educational insight that I have learned from this experience was the importance of developing children’s fine motor skills. The most significant experience I had this thursay was when the teacher sang in front of the students because they were so noisy. I saw the effectiveness of songs when getting students attention. The educational Insight that I have learned from this experience was the principle of transitions. Transitions are so important because without this, there wouldn't be a smooth flow of the class and there would be many dull and chaotic moments.

Friday, Pak Sunardi invited us to join the zumba session of the fkip students in Mulawarman. It was so fun!

a week to remember

my last day in school

The most significant experience  I had this monday was when the teachers and I line up in fron of the gate and welcomed. The children were very respectful becasue they would do "salim" or mano po before they get inside the school. Some would place my hand to their cheek, some to their forehead and some would kiss them. If the child would kiss your hand, that means she/he respects you so much

The most significant experience  I had this tuesday was when I had my teaching demo with the children in sentra Persiappan, I realized that when you let the children do the activity you have to guide them and as much as possible be present in the process. the educational insight that I have learned with this experience is the principle of scaffolding. Scaffolding refers to the type of assistance provided when a child is working to accomplish a task. While there are many ways to offer support to a child, such as giving specific instructions on what to do, showing them what to do through demonstration, or offering general encouragement when they are on the right track, studies have shown that no single strategy has proven to be superior.

The most significant experience I had this wednesday when I had my teaching demo at sentra alam was when I let the children watch a video clip. The video was a nout young boy who was given the opportunity of being a pilot just for one day. He was called the genius and brilliant boy. I chose this video becasue my topic was about "Pilot". I want them to realize that it is possible to achieve your dreams when you strive hard and study everyday. The educational insight that I have learned from this experience was the importance of visuals like pictires and videos in presenting concepts to the kids.

The most significant experience I had this thursday when I had my teaching demo at sentra Seni was when the children had their activity and were playing musical instruments. The education insight that I have learned from this experience was the importance of providing developmentally appropriate materials to the chidren.
